Van Dyke Parks

When the name Van Dyke Parks is mentioned, words like genius, legend, & real musician usually follow. A musical prodigy, he also worked as a child actor, including Grace Kelly's final film, The Swan (1958). A year after graduating from Carnegie Tech, he was signed to MGM Records as a recording artist, put together a band whose members included a young Stephen Stills, & later signed to Warner Bros. He’s worked with, produced, arranged, or played on albums by Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, U2, Silverchair, Ry Cooder, The Everly Brothers, Laurie Anderson, Tim Buckley, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, The Byrds, Rufus Wainwright, Judy Collins, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Carly Simon, T-Bone Burnett, Bonnie Raitt, Peter Case, Gordon Lightfoot, Sonny & Cher, Little Feat, Inara George, and countless other respected & well known artists, played a key role in completing "Sail On Sailor," with the Beach Boys, and his partnering with Brian Wilson for the SMiLE album is the stuff of legend. He recently completed work with Brian Wilson on That Lucky Old Sun, a new narrative song cycle, and maintains his "day job"... film work on scores by Ry Cooder and others, writing and arranging for Shelley Duvall's children's TV series, and other pursuits. He composed "Black Sheep" for Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, worked with Inara George on An Invitation, released in 2008, performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and contributed to the new record by The Shortwave Set, a collaborative project by John Cale and Danger Mouse, tentatively titled Replica Sun Machine. All that AND five acclaimed albums of his own work. If a life in music is what you aspire to, Van Dyke Parks is one of the few who can truly say, "Been there/Done that" and is STILL doing it!
