Jackie Shaw
Seminar! Song Critique!

Jackie Shaw! In the early 70’s, a young actress and musician co-wrote several songs for a musical production with a well known and respected songwriter in New York. Hearing the production was scrapped, she moved on to other things, until one day a friend said: “You have to come see this new Broadway Show!” There, on stage, she heard HER songs coming back at her. She immediately called her co writer and exclaimed :“Hi! I Just saw The Wiz and our songs are in….” Them she heard, “Those are NOT OUR songs…(click).”

First hand experience can be a great motivator. Jackie Shaw now understood the importance of getting the BUSINESS side of the craft in order, and to have an understanding of how the “starmaker machinery” really works. After working as Director of Promotions for ESP Records, Jackie relocated to L.A. with the promise of a record deal, and found a “daygig” with an attorney. With a renewed clarity of purpose, she honed her negotiation skills moving on to the healthcare industry before establishing herself at Warner, and later Fox, as the manager of legal rights and clearances. Always an artist advocate , she is a mentor to many, having “been there and done that”, on both sides of the mic. Jackie Shaw is someone you NEED to know, and she will be coming to answer your questions and LISTEN to you and your music.

MOSES AVALON

MOSES AVALON is THE MAN that exposes the scams! After Lester Chambers Facebook post, this is more timely than ever! With 5 platinum albums and years of experience producing music for Warner, and BMG, Moses was startled to meet so many platinum & Grammy-winning artists FLAT BROKE, because of bad Moses Avalondealings with record labels. He realized that signing a major label deal could be the kiss of death if it was signed without knowing what all that legal stuff means. Starting out to expose the conspiracies and hidden agendas of the "major label mafia", he soon discovered that it really wasn't ALL the fault of those in power, but rather a HUGE lack of understanding from all concerned. From his experience as a consultant, Moses has plenty of great new stories to share, tons of fresh information you need to know, all delivered to you in his unique and entertaining style...always something new, no matter how often you check out his seminars and workshops! His book, MILLION DOLLAR MISTAKES Interviews people who've worked with top artists, like Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera, The Beatles, Madonna and many, many more. Valuable information for both new people entering the business and veterans. Recently updated, "Confessions of a Record Producer" educates, and illuminates through the use of real contracts and stories. Moses turns the boring legal mumbo-jumbo into riveting illustrations that you WILL remember when your turn comes to cut a deal. Moses' seminars are ALWAYS a lotta fun, and you actually might learn something that'll save your assets! FREE!

NIGEL GRAINGE

Legendary A&R Man Nigel Grainge received industry-wide acclaim for his successful signings of Thin Lizzy, The Boomtown Rats, The Waterboys, 10cc, Sinead O’Connor, The Steve Miller Band, Graham Parker and the Rumor and World Party. Now based in LA, Nigel continues his passion to discover and develop new talent. Together with Bob Geldof, he is working with YouBloom, a worldwide music site committed to empowering unsigned artists to extend their reach and help them turn their music “cents” into dollars, using his enormous tunes database to provide uncovered gems for artists to record. A recent visitor has been Robert Plant who is considering several of the songs for new projects, including a follow-up to his enormously successful LP with Alison Krauss. Nigel says: "Over the past decade, the big development has been that artists now rule. That may sound like a good thing but artists now insist on such watertight contracts and put themselves into such a firm driving position that when they have a hit, they become uncontrollable, don't listen to advice, they think they're infallible and exclude everybody else's input. Obviously, the record industry has brought this on itself but the truth is that the artist doesn't always know best…over the coming years, you're going to see more and more acts going off the rails. The future of music is going to be one hit wonders and one LP bands. And that to me is an appalling prospect." Nigel knows from experience what being signed REALLY means. More than just looking for great material, he’s also looking to HELP YOU understand what it takes so you can have a real career in this industry.

In a male dominated field of dreams, Lenise Bent has forged a path to success & recognition placing her at the top of an elite roster of producer-engineers. Credits on legendary albums by Steely Dan, Supertramp, The Knack & Blondie, working in the finest studios around such as Ocean Way, The Village, AIR London & The Record Plant, have given her the ears & experience needed to be one of the most highly sought-after & respected engineer/producers in the industry. Her credits go far beyond hit records too, post production mixing, editing, ADR and foley, supervising & producing the vocals and dialogue recording for foreign language versions of Dreamworks films including SHREK, SPIRIT & SHREK 2. Lenise is a long-standing member of NARAS, the Producers and Engineers Wing of the Recording Academy and has recently been elected to the board of directors of the Los Angeles chapter of Women in Music. She is also a production coordinator with Active Music, a non-profit organization that raises awareness and money for other non-profits through the music community. Lenise periodically teaches classes at SAE Institute on “Studio Budgets, Protocols and Etiquette” and “Location Sound, Foley and Hard Effects”. Five years ago Lenise returned to her true love, music, and is recording and producing up-and-coming independent artists as well as seasoned professionals. She believes ”there are only two kinds of music…good and bad. I love working on all styles…as long as it’s in the first group.”
