TRAVIS ALLEN - GUEST SPEAKER - SEMINAR AND SONG CRITIQUE

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3, 2016 , 7:30pm -10:00pm

"You gotta know the rules before you can break 'em".

*** Travis also mentioned to me on the side he has some artists in development & needs songs that sound like: Mainstream Top 40 Country - Male Artist ala Keith Urban, Eric Church, Thomas Rhett Top 40 Pop- Female Artist- ala Katy Perry, Taylor Swift Traditional Country Male Artist- ala George Strait Top 40 Country- Female Artist, ala Terri Clark, Brandy Clark ***

Part of the new cutting edge of the Nashville scene, TRAVIS ALLEN has written out "The Formula". Let’s face it, we hear a lot of dumb songs that sell millions. The lyrics are so simple they sound like a 10 year old wrote the song. However, sometimes the hardest part of the craft is writing simple. If you’re an artist, your lyrics are the channel you speak to the world with. After working on thousands of songs & recordings, both at Nashville Tracks & beyond, Travis knows what it takes. It is vital to communicate your lyric in a way that it is not too personal, so that it is universally accepted. Some of what we'll be discussing (with YOUR songs)
Telling a Story in Sequence.
Keeping your lyrics conversational and using proper grammar.
Keeping your lyrics succinct.
Phrasing A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words!
Where the title belongs An much more!

As the owner of Multimedia Nashville & Nashville Tracks in L.A, Travis does more than just engineer & produce, his company also builds websites & works with new technologies to bring his clients up to speed in the modern mainstream. An artist in his own right, signed with Courage / Chrysalis Records, Travis toured extensively with Grand Ol Opry Stars like Jack Green, Jeannie Sealy, Jeanie C. Riley, Little Jimmie Dickens & Jim Ed Brown. Coming off the road, he got a position in the A&R department of Asylum Records, & currently is a producer/engineer working with both major & indie record companies. Working in the heart of TWO music centers, Nashville & LA, Travis has a unique perspective on this business & how MUSIC is always before BUSINESS if you’re looking for a lasting career in this industry. He’s heard the best, & as an artist himself he knows what happens when the “label system” doesn’t quite deliver the dream. Working In A&R, he understands why some artists are commercially successful, while others, sometimes with more talent, don’t quite “make it”. AND… HE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR STUFF!

Bring your demos, notepads & dreams to this FREE one-on-one session with TRAVIS ALLEN. You’ll see for yourself how Nashville ain’t just your daddy’s country music any more! Travis Allen @ SongNet August 3rd , 7:30pm The Coffee Gallery Backstage 2029 N. Lake Ave Altadena 2 miles N. off the 210 freeway FREE!

GUEST SPEAKER PETER KIMMEL AND TOMMY DEARTH- SEMINAR AND SONG CRITIQUE

WEDNESDAY MAY 4, 2016 , 7:30pm -10:00pm

Back in what many consider the Golden Age of singer-songwriters, the place to be was “The Canyon”, actually the hills above Hollywood. Legends like Joni Mitchell, Mamas & Papas, Crosby Stills & Nash lived there & hung out together. Peter Kimmel was there too, as a friend & fellow artist. Hanging out at the Whisky one night, someone yelled “Hey can you grab that amp?” Helping load out the house band (the soon to be famous Doors) that night, started him on a journey inside the music industry, finding out firsthand why the starmaker machinery worked for some & not others. Soon, he found himself running parts of that machine himself, booking, then managing artists, shopping deals, scouting and developing talent, & placing music. Realizing that the big corporate side of the business could shred a person’s soul, Peter chose to remain independent, creating his own place, where artists could discuss their situations directly with the one who was going to really try to make a difference. Selections from his catalog have been placed with CBS, NBC, FX, ABC, Disney/Hollywood Records, independent &corporate films, and television commercials such as Volkswagen. He represents numerous artists' work in his Catalog, in a wide variety of music styles. With decades of wisdom & experience, Peter is one of those guys who has made it through the fire, yet is humble, accessible, & willing to help!

Tommy Dearth is the owner and co-founder of Dearth Music Licensing, a successful music placement company with over 300 famous and indie artists and composers, and Dearth Productions, A film production company that specializes in film, TV shows, live events, commercials and more. With a Bachelors degree in Music Industry Studies from Cal State University of Northridge, Tommy started his career producing and performing in concerts at a very young age. In 2011-2013 he worked at Winogradsky/Sobel, a music legal firm and licensing company. He later found himself at Alfred Music Publishing's music rental library, preparing and renting the original scores to all of Warner Bros. music, including Harry Potter, Inception, Star Wars and George Gershwin.

Best known for her #1 hits "What a Girl Wants" and "Come On Over Baby", Shelly Peiken is a multi-platinum songwriter who also earned a Grammy nomination for the song "Bitch" recorded by Meredith Brooks. With hundreds of songs placed on albums, and in TV and film, Shelly is well known in the music industry as mentor, panelist, consultant and guest speaker. Her Serial Songwriter Facebook page has become a forum for all things songwriting and ideas about navigating a changing music business as a creative person and parent. A New Yorker at heart who enjoys her life in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter, she says “I’ve always been inspired by the place within that’s in a continual state of pursuit: a search for something different, something better, or what might have been…it’s from that state of divine discontent songs can’t help but emerge.” Inspiration & understanding, shared by a hit songwriter whose recently released book (Confessions of a Serial Songwriter) is charting just like her music, a priceless evening with a priceless songwriter, FREE!

You’ve probably seen & met him @ one of the big seminar/expo events around town. The nice, quiet guy with glasses, licorice stix & books on the table. The most powerful books you’ll have IF you know what to do with ‘em.  Ritch began his career at A&M working in the promotions. In 1981 he went on to work for Arista eventually heading up in the A&R department. He’s worked with artists such as Barry Manilow, Air Supply, Aretha Franklin, The Thompson Twins and Whitney Houston, & also taught courses on the music business at UCLA and USC. In 1992, he formed the Music Business Registry, a company that specializes in accurate, up-to-the-minute industry information. Currently, the company publishes The A&R Registry, The Publisher Registry, The Music Attorney Registry, and The Film/TV Music Guide. His humble demeanor belies the fact that he is one of the most connected & respected people in the music industry. He’s been to the top of the mountain, & he knows what it takes to get there. He’s uniquely qualified to put out these directories, the “Golden Rolodex” of the music industry, because he KNOWS these people, & understands their value as PEOPLE. The revolving doors of the music business are almost as transient as pro sports. Your connection at a company this week may be working for the competition tomorrow. It’s all just business, but it’s always best on a PERSONAL level. Ritch can explain this business better than just about anyone, and knows good music too! Ritch can tell ya what your next step should be. SO, Bring your notepads demos & dreams! FREE!

SHOWCASE

WEDNESDAY March 25, 2015, 7:30-10:00pm

ANNUAL SONGNET AWARDS NIGHT and SHOWCASE at the Coffee Gallery. If you're in L.A., and released a CD in the last year, PLEASE let us know so we can recognize you at this very special showcase event! We know of at least three artists who released CDs last year but they have not contacted us! We want to award you! Unlike the big production awards in which everyone seems to ask each other 'why did they get all the awards again?' or 'why did he jump up and interrupt her acceptance speech' or just simply channel flip trying not to be bored, the annual SongNet Award goes to those artists that have poured out their energy, blood, sweat, souls, and creativity into a CD package of songs for all to enjoy. If that's you this year, you're a winner. Tell us. Please email Jimi directly: jimi@songnet.INFO. The SongNet Songwriter's Showcase is hosted by Jimi Yamagishi and Melissa Thatcher. The Showcase features many different songwriters from local talent to internationals passing through Los Angeles. Sign up early if you want to play- 2 songs or 10 minutes per artist! No fee, no cover, in other words, FREE. (But buy some great coffee and a snack)

GUEST SPEAKER/AUTHOR WARREN SELLERS - SEMINAR

WEDNESDAY January 7, 2015, 7:30pm -10:00pm

Author nite with Warren Sellers!! Artists have stories. Most of the time, they wind up as songs. But other times, well, they’re just too much for that 3 minute blast. In fact, things we’ve learned, stuff we’ve done, heck, just to have survived the industry up to this point is a LOT. So we’ve all heard: “You should write a book!” Thanks to changes in technology & the way people gather their infotainment, becoming an author is within the grasp of everyone, and better still, it can be another way to generate income, promote who you are, & provide that little extra credibility that is critical to a career these days. Warren Sellers has researched the real stories behind some of the best known songs around, & in the process has learned a LOT about what make a hit really happen. He can also tell you how actually getting a book published has changed his perspectives, and how he is perceived as well. Once again, we’ll be doing our special “no risk raffle”* for one of his books, and he will be listening to your songs on CD, Priceless information & commentary! Bring your notepads demos & dreams! Honoring our friend, KENNY KERNER

SongNet will have a special meeting celebrating Kenny Kerner’s life. He was to be our guest speaker for the evening, and as most of you may know, he passed on earlier this week. Kenny was one of the most influential people in the industry, taking his experience with the “Old School” way of doing things & working with “New School” ideas & concepts to create “Thecoolschool” with his friend Chris Fletcher.

If you were a friend of his, have some stories to share or just want to come hear what he was all about, please join us. You will find that by sharing a life, you learn much. & that is what Kenny was all about. His famous use of expletives to punctuate a point was real, & true to a man who made use of street knowledge to educate those who didn’t understand the HEART of this business.

We hope to have many industry friends dropping through, if possible, please msg me personally on facebook or my personal email over the weekend to let me know you are coming so we can provide you a moment to share.

Thanks!

She has a wide variety of knowledge that is important for Songwriters and Performers while working in the Copyright Department. This department intersects many department at Warner-Chappell.

As part of Warner-Chappell’s rights & clearances, Lisa knows ALL the players in this game. She will be explaining what to look for, where to pitch, HOW to pitch & what NOT to do as well. She will also explain how tough it is to get in when a company like W/C has their OWN production music company to tap from…but it can be done. If you’re serious about your music, you know how important it is to know someone on the inside of one of the biggest & most powerful music companies in the world, so here’s an op you do NOT want to miss! Yes, as always, she will be listening & commenting on YOUR work, so… Bring your notepads, demos & dreams!

More details will be posted on our site @ www.thesongnet.org as we get closer to the event!
And as always, this one is still FREE!

WEDNESDAY July 3, 2013, 7:30pm -10:00pm
Wednesday July 3rd 7:30 PM Composer/filmmaker event!

Several members have mentioned there’s not a heckuvalot around for COMPOSERS in the songwriting community. So we talked to several of you and a few friends & came up with this event! We’re inviting several indie filmmaker friends to come & screen a few scenes while composers get to try doing a LIVE SCORE to PICTURE just for fun & to showcase what you really do! It’ll be fun, improvisational & an excellent way to get to meeting the people you want to really get to know! Of course, all are welcome, and the entertainment value is sure to be off da hook !
For regular singer-songwriters, here’s an op to find out what filmmakers really want, & maybe why your stuff isn’t getting picked up. Our filmmaker guests will have a brief Q&A before their clips are shown, so even if you don’t get a chance to try playing for a scene you really think you can fit, you will have the opportunity to get the info & connect later, knowing what that filmmaker has in mind.
This is our first attempt at this kind of event, so the future of our composers section depends on interest. So for this one, we are asking for RSVPs to Showcase@songnet.info so we know how many people to expect. Please list if you are a composer or filmmaker when you sign up. More details will be posted on our site @ www.thesongnet.org as we get closer to the event!
And as always, this one is still FREE!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR BOTH COMPOSERS & Indie Filmmakersfor this one, & need you to RSVP to showcase@songnet.info so we know how many to expect! Please indicate if you're a composer or filmmaker when RSVP-ing Free!
